2008 Project: Expanding Horizons

DESCRIPTION:

IRSC in collaboration with Workforce Development hosts this six weeks hands-on program serves some 600 14-18 year olds.  The students are low income and have at least one barrier. Students will learn leadership skills, citizenship skills, receive relevant information on career pathways as relates to occupational skills.

They also receive remediation in basic skills, are introduced to parenting skills, and receive F-CAT preparation. In addition to the subjects learned in the classroom setting, the students have recreational activities such as swimming and basketball, and the opportunity to display their talent in a talent contest. 

Also addressed are gangs, drugs, and sexual conditions Students are bussed from the four counties within the Consortium to the main campus. Teams rotate through activities on a weekly basis. During the career exploration component, the students are actively engaged in learning job specific skills. The students also take part in community service projects.
