2008 Project: Atlantic Technical Center Shuffle

INSTITUTION AND/OR DISTRICT:
Atlantic Technical Center and Broward County

BEST PRACTICE FOCUS:
Professional Development

CAREER PATHWAYS CONSORTIUM:
Broward County

DESCRIPTION:

This 3 hour activity on a teacher planning day was developed in order to further develop collaboration between high school and technical center faculty and staff. All staff was placed into 1 of 20 pre-determined teams of 10 members. The teams were set up so that there was a cross pollination of departments and programs. A team leader and coach were designated and all members followed a specific route on our 30 acre campus, visiting 6 different programs.

All members traveled together and upon arrival at their stops, they were asked a specific, but relatively easy question about the program they were visiting. Upon answering, whether right or wrong (if wrong they were given the right answer), they received a playing a card. The team leader or coach collected the cards and at the end of their route, all teams returned to the cafeteria. Each team leader and coach was seated within a large semi-circle. Video cameras were set up so that the table and participants were able to be viewed on the 6 ceiling mounted large screen so that all faculty and staff could watch. The Pit Boss then asked each team a specific but harder program question. If the team got it right, they received a 7th playing card. I they got it wrong, they did not received an additional card. The teams displayed their 5 best cards and the top 10 teams went into the elimination round. A new deck of cards was used to deal out 3 cards.

After the 3 cards were dealt, the Pit Boss asked each team a question. This group of questions was a bit more difficult. If they got it right, they received a card. If they got it wrong, they did not this was done twice so the teams could gather a total of 5 cards. Based upon the cards dealt, the top 3 teams were picked with the best hand.

Even though there were 3 winning teams, the faculty and staff laughed a lot, learned something new, and everyone met someone they did not know before this activity. It was an energetic and fun way to collaborate and the perfect kickoff for the year-long professional development activities that have been planned.

Each winning team was given a $50.00 American Express gift card so that the teams could meet on the next planning day, have lunch together, further developing friendships and realizing that while the contact may be different, we are all in this as a team to promote excellence in academic, career and technical studies in order to prepare students to enter and remain competitive in the global workforce.
